Thank you for visiting our team page and reading our story. 2020 brought so many changes to everyone, but sadly it also brought the loss of the head of our family, Bobby Tanner, to Glioblastoma Multiforme.
In December 2019, our family sat in an exam room at Hollings Cancer Center in Charleston as we waited for the results of Bobby's most recent MRI. There was a poster on the back of the door for Head for the Cure, and the upcoming 2020 5k.
We decided immediately that we wanted to devote our time to the cause and fight this terrible disease. Several dear friends and family members made the trip down in February 2020 for Team Tanner's first Head for the Cure 5K and were part of a special day ~ paying tribute and honor to those that have lost their battle with brain cancer and those that are still fighting. Bobby was also awarded Head for the Cure’s Keeping the Faith award.
We lost Bobby on May 25, 2020. The loss is immeasurable and there are no words to say how much we miss him. He had his own mischievous grin, humble words, and a strong spirit. Bobby loved his God, his best friend and wife Linda, his family ~ including friends that ARE family, his beautiful hay pastures at the Double T Ranch and his horses.
Even after such a tremendous loss, we know there is so much work to do for the brain cancer community. We have decided as a family to stay involved and continue the fight on behalf of those that can't any longer. Our prayers are that no other family has to endure the loss that we have. Although our team is Team Tanner, we also wish to pay tribute to others we know that have lost their battle to this disease, Jimmy Jewell, Bobby's brother-in-law, and Bill Hembree and Joe Massey, fathers of two dear friends.
The biggest request we have is that you say a prayer for families that have endured loss to this disease and others that are in their own fight.
Head for the Cure works to inspire hope for the community of brain cancer patients, their families, friends, caregivers and other supporters, while celebrating their courage, spirit and energy. Every Head for the Cure event marks a day of celebration where those diagnosed with brain cancer are honored and celebrated by their friends and families, those who have lost their battles are remembered, and we are all inspired to carry on the fight.
Funds raised by Head for the Cure support the Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative, a network of medical centers with the expertise and the desire to participate in state-of-the-art clinical trials investigating new treatments for malignant brain tumors.
Each year, over 80,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor. More than 120 types of brain tumors exist, making effective treatment complicated. Cutting edge research is needed as we continue to make strides in this fight.
