Running for Dad
I was inspired to run my first 5K by my wife, Meredith, who ran one in November. I wanted to do it for health reasons, to work towards a goal, etc, but I also wanted to do it for a good cause. I have definitely found that cause in Head for the Cure.
My dad, Daniel Ray Burrows, died when I was 4 years old, in 1990, of a brain tumor. He was survived by myself and my 4 siblings, all under 10 years old at the time, and his loving wife, my mom, Carolyn. Our mom remarried to a good man named Tony, and I and my siblings came to know him as Dad as well. But we still greatly missed our Dan Dad, especially the older kids who knew and remember him best. It was truly tragic, what happened to him and to us. Dad was a great father, husband to our mom, son to our grandparents, and he had managed to do so much in his shortened life.
Now, my siblings and I, as well as their spouses or partners, have decided to form a run team called Daniel Ray's Run Gang. We would like to raise funds for research into brain cancer and to run in his name, to represent him and to help make what happened to us less likely to happen to other families.
I and the team are participating in Head for the Cure - Austin on March 27th, 2022.
Each year, over 84,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor. More than 120 types of brain tumors exist, making effective treatment complicated. Cutting edge research is needed as we continue to make strides in this fight.
Head for the Cure works to inspire hope for the community of brain cancer patients, their families, friends, caregivers and other supporters, while celebrating their courage, spirit and energy. Every Head for the Cure event marks a day of celebration where those diagnosed with brain cancer are honored and celebrated by their friends and families, those who have lost their battles are remembered, and we are all inspired to carry on the fight.
Funds raised by Head for the Cure support the Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative, a network of medical centers with the expertise and the desire to participate in state-of-the-art clinical trials investigating new treatments for malignant brain tumors.
Please consider making a donation today to help me reach my goal and to help Head for the Cure defeat brain cancer, step by step!
