Welcome to Team Cher Bears
In memory of Cheri Rice Massa I am joining the fight against brain cancer by participating in Head for the Cure St. Louis on June 23rd, 2019. Head for the Cure is dedicated to raising funds and awareness for brain cancer research.
Cheri was a force to be reckoned with. Anyone that knew her knew that. She was as sweet as she was strong willed. You could see from the outside she was beautiful, but more importantly she was beautiful on the inside. Cheri was very givng and faithful. I hope in the spirit of Cheri's giving nature that you will contribute in order to help others like Cheri find answers leading to a cure.
Many of you knew Cheri, but didn't know her compelling story that abruptly changed her life & the lives of everyone she loved. Cheri was diagnosed with a Grade 4 Glioblastoma in September 2017. Before that she and her family knew very little about brain cancer. Their lives quickly centered around her treatment & care. Over the next 13 months, Cheri underwent 2 brain surgeries, grueling chemo therapy, radiation, and participated in studies for new treatments. During that time, she suffered from aphasia making it difficult for her to express herself - she would often mix up words and struggled to read and write which as you can imagine would be super frustrating. As time went on, the cancer continued to affect her brain function causing her to become less and less independent.
On October 11, 2018, she lost her battle to cancer making it just over a year from her diagnosis which is the typical life expectancy for someone with her diagnosis. She was 55 years old. Before she was diagnosed with cancer, she showed no signs of slowing down - she was healthy and full of life & spunk. (When you look up the word 'spunk' Cheri's picture should be there.)
Each year, over 79,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor. More than 120 types of brain tumors exist, making effective treatment complicated. Cutting edge research is needed as we continue to make strides in this fight.
Head for the Cure works to inspire hope for the community of brain cancer patients, their families, friends, caregivers and other supporters, while celebrating their courage, spirit and energy. Every Head for the Cure event marks a day of celebration where those diagnosed with brain cancer are honored and celebrated by their friends and families, those who have lost their battles are remembered, and we are all inspired to carry on the fight.
Funds raised by Head for the Cure support the Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative, a network of medical centers with the expertise and desire to participate in state-of-the-art clinical trials investigating new treatments for malignant brain tumors.
Please make your donation NOW in Cheri's memory and help me reach my goal and help Head for the Cure defeat brain cancer. Thank you.
